04 The Rattrap
( Selma Lagerlof)
Summary Of the Lesson
The Rattrap is a story about a rattrap seller who leads a very poor life as his earnings are very low. He has to resort to thievery and begging to make both ends meet. He is alone in this whole world and leads a miserable life. So he starts knitting up various kinds of thoughts. One of these thoughts is of supposing the whole world as a big rattrap. His views are that the world offers us various types of baits in the form of comforts of life. This in return traps us into the rattrap of the world and leads us to various types of miseries.
Every night, the peddler had to search for shelter as he has no home. One evening he was offered shelter by an old crofter. The next morning he stole the crofter’s money which he had earned by selling his cow’s milk. To safeguard himself, the peddler chose the path through the forest which was secluded, but soon found himself trapped in the forest as he wasn’t able to find the way out of the dense forest. Later on, he finds a way to a forge and takes shelter there. Something unusual happens. The ironmaster mistakes him as an old friend and invites him to his house. The poor peddler rejects the offer due to the fear of being caught. Soon he is invited by the ironmaster‘s daughter. The next morning he is somehow stopped by the ironmaster’s daughter for Christmas Eve even after being caught that he was a peddler and not Captain Stalhe.
The next day after Christmas, when the ironmaster and his daughter visit the church, they come to know that the man is a thief who had stolen money from the old crofter. The iron master and his daughter repent for sheltering a thief and wonder at what all things he would have stolen by that time. Here comes a twist as instead of stealing, the peddler gifts the ironmaster’s daughter a rattrap. She finds a letter of thanks and the stolen money inside the rattrap. The peddler thanks Edla for her kindness and requests her to return the stolen money to the crofter. This story gives us the message that goodness in a human being can be awakened at any time with your own good deeds.
द
Long Answer Types all The Questions
Q1. In what way the
peddler gets the philosophical idea that the whole world is nothing but a big
tattrap?
Ans. The peddler gets the
philosophical idea that the whole world is nothing but a big rattrap He
understands the philosophy that world has no purpose of its existence but to
set baits for people. The world also offers things to lure human being as the
rattrap offers cheese and pork to lure rats and mice. Thus the world attracts
human beings to bind them in carnal activities. The peddler falls into a line
of thoughts and reaches into an interested idea that the whole world around him
is nothing but a big rattrap. Its existence is only to set baits for people.
The person touches the bait and is closed in the trap, and everything comes to
an end.
Q.2. Why does the
peddler not expect the kind hospitality that he receives from the crofter?
Ans. The peddler does not expect any
kind of hospitality that is given to him by the crofter. The hospitality shown by crofter was to set baits for poor
people like him who wander around. The crofter is an old man without family
members. So he was happy to get someone to talk to in his lonely life. He at
once puts the porridge pot on the hearth and welcomes the guest with supper.
Then they enjoy pipe and discuss many things. Thus the old man is just and
generous. But the peddler had not expected such kind of hospitality as he has
received from the crofter as the peddler had always met sour faces when he
knocked at their door.
Q.3. What is the reason that the ironmaster treats the peddler
in a kind manner and also invites to his home?
Ans. The ironmaster treats the peddler in a
kind manner. The peddler is astonished by this wonderful treatment of the
ironmaster. The kindness shown by the ironmaster was not his natural behavior,
but it was due to the misunderstanding as he thought the trader with rattrap as
his old regimental comrade. So, the
ironmaster and his daughter welcome the peddler. Even when the reality is
disclosed. she does not misbehave with him, as Edla says that they ought not to
chase away a human being whom they have asked to come to their house, and to
whom they have promised Christmas cheer.
Q.4. Discuss the
ways in which the crofter receives the peddler in his house as his guest,
Ans. The crofter receives the
peddler in his house as his guest. The rattrap peddler is in a poor condition.
He sees a cottage where he is willing to find shelter for night stay. The crofter
is an old and lonely man in the cottage. The old man becomes happy to talk with
the peddler. He puts the porridge pot on the hearth and serves him fresh and
savoury food. He also offers the stranger a pipe. Then they play cards. The
peddler is happy with this treatment. This way peddler is received warmly by
the crofter.
Q.5. In the story
The Rattrap' there are persons who suffer from loneliness. Who are they?
Discuss their personalities and activities. कहानी 'The
Ans. In the story "The
Rattrap' there are three characters who suffer from loneliness. They need to bond
with others. These three characters represent three strata of our society:
(i)
The peddler with the rattraps- He is called a tramp, a vagabond and stranger
in many places in the story. He walks doggedly and slowly with heavy steps
along the road. He is lost in his own thoughts. He seeks shelter for night. But
people look at him with sour faces. When he enters the forge, the blacksmiths
look haughtily at him.
(ii)
The old crofter-
He suffers from loneliness. He has
neither wife nor child. The cow which supports him is no company. He feels
happy when he gets the peddler to talk to in his loneliness in his solitary
cottage.
(iii)
The ironmaster - He
lives with his daughter in his manor house. His wife Elizabeth had ( died and
his sons are abroad. His request to Captain von Stahle to accompany him shows the
need of human bonding. He frankly says that they didn't have anyone for Christmas.
I.
III.
Q6. Who was the protagonist of the chapter 'The Rattrap'? What
was his condition and how was he struggling for the survival? Describe
explaining his philosophical thought about the whole world.
'द
Ans.
The protagonist of the chapter The Rattrap is the peddler the rattraps seller.
His condition was very poor and miserable and for the survival, he was not only
selling the rattraps wandering here and there but doing petty thievery time to
time. His philosophical thought about the whole world was absolutely different
from others. His idea about the whole world was the whole world with its lands
and baseas, it cities and villages- was nothing but a big rattrap. It had never
existed for any other purpose than to set baits for people. It offered riches
and joys, shelter and food, heat and clothing, exactly as the rattrap offered
cheese and pork, and as soon as anyone let himself be tempted to touch the
bait, it closed in on him, and then everything come to an end.
Q.7. Whose cottage did the peddler find along the road? How was
he treated by the owner of the cottage and why?
Ans.
Along the road, the peddler found the cottage of an old man who used to live
there alone. The owner of the cottage, that old man-treated with him like a
quest He welcomed the peddler and offered him porridge and the supper. Then he
carved off a slice from his tobacco roll and gave to the stranger. Finally he
got out an old pack of cards and played mjolis with the peddler until bedtime.
The old man, the crofter who was the owner of that cottage, treated that
peddler, the stranger in such a friendly manner because he was without wife or
child, and was happy to get someone to talk to in his loneliness.
Q.8. What happened when the peddler stole the money from
crofter's house? What difficulty did he face after it and how did he escape?
Ans.
When the peddler stole the money from crofter's house, he walked along with the
money in his pocket and felt quite pleased with his smartness. He dared not
running continue on the public highway, so he turned into the woods. During his
first hours this caused him no difficulty, but later in the day it became
worse, for it was big and confusing forest which he had gotten into. The whole
forest, with its trunks and branches, its thickets and fallen logs, closed in
upon him like an impenetrable prison from which he could never escape. He
escaped when he heard a regular hard thumping sound and staggered into that
direction and got shelter in Ramsjo ironworks.
Q.9. Who entered inside the forge with a valet? What did that
person do with the stranger? What was stranger's reaction at that?
Ans.
In the forge a less pretty modest and quite shy girl-Ironmaster's daughter Edla
Willmansson entered with a valet. That person Edia looked at him
compassionately, with her heavy eyes and felt sorry for him having such a hard
time. She consolated that peddler that he might be sure, that he would be
allowed to leave them just as freely as he had come. She assumed him captain
and requested to stay with them over Christmas Eve. She said that in such a friendly manner that
the rattrap peddler must have felt confidence in her. The stranger's reaction
was unexpected, he accepted the fur coat which the valet handed him with a deep
bow, threw it over his rags, and followed the young lady out to the carriage
and went home.
Q.10. What happened with the stranger at ironmaster's house? How
was he treated by Edla Willmansson?
Ans.
At ironmaster's house, firstly the stranger was welcomed and bathed and shaved
and given ironmaster's suit to him as a Christmas present. Then in the morning
at the breakfast table, his identity cleared and the ironmaster ordered him to
go out from his house. But the ironmaster's daughter, Edla stopped him from
going and argued with her father for him. She didn't want to disappoint the
quest and herself own too. She had prepared good dishes and other offerings for
that stranger to make him feel homely. Apparently, they themselves had invited
that peddler to celebrate Christmas Evening That's why Edia treated that
stranger as a guest, as a captain and didn't let him go from there even her
father's disapproval.
.
Q11. What made the peddler finally change his ways?
Ans.
The peddler was a man who used to wander here and there selling rattraps. He
was a vagabond and having very ill manners. For his livelihood he used to do
petty thievery time to time whenever got the chance. He stole thirty kronors of
the crofter who sheltered and honored him Later, he was carried to the
ironmasters house by Edia, she was the daughter of the ironmaster. There, he
was treated very well and homely by Edla Wilmansson. He was offered Christmas
food and all the offerings of the festival. He was given room for staying, a
suit of ironmaster to wear as a Christmas present.
In total, he was treated as a family
member and given the best treatment as possible. He was a wanderer and a thief
but at fronmaster's house, he was a guest and received respect and love which
he had never received anywhere. So, this humane and friendly behaviour and
unexpected honour finally changed his ways. At last, he became a gentleman and
a civilized man which can be understood by his last act of returning thirty
kronors and a thanking letter to Miss Edla Willmansson.
Q.12. How does the metaphor of the rattrap serve to highlight
the human predicament?
Ans.
The metaphor of rattrap as elucidated by the rattrap seller compares the riches
and joys in life to a bait. In the story too, it is clear that the rattrap
seller had to suffer because he fell into the bait, which was money here. The
moment he does, his predicament begins.
The story highlights how when the peddler gives back the stolen money,
he achieves peace of mind and his otherwise apparent end is averted.
